Chapter Eight

“Damn him. How does he do it?” Meg peered into the window of the daycare classroom. Careful to not get caught spying, she watched as Haley offered an adult-sized chair to Chance, then took her seat in the other one. He pulled the chair closer so their knees almost touched.

Meg strained to hear but couldn’t make out anything but murmurs. If she used a spell she could hear them better, but she was afraid the blue mist that accompanied her spells would attract attention either from the two in the classroom or someone passing by on the street.

Chance leaned forward and took Haley’s hand. The young woman reacted by sitting back, obviously thrown by the gesture, but she didn’t remove her hand from his.

Meg had to wonder if she’d made a mistake. Thinking that Haley was not only virtuous but young and innocent, Meg had assumed she wouldn’t make an easy prey for Chance. Yet watching them now, she had to wonder if the opposite wasn’t true. Maybe Haley’s innocence worked against Meg, making the young woman vulnerable to Chance’s charms. After all, the man had a gift for getting under women’s skin—not to mention their clothes.

Meg gasped as Chance slipped a hand behind Haley’s neck and brought her forward for a kiss. How had he gotten her to kiss him so fast? She clutched the window frame, ignoring the paint chips working their way under her fingernails.

Calm down. It’s only a kiss. And a kiss is a long way from sex. Perhaps she and Chance should’ve outlined exactly what constituted sex. Did he believe as she did? Was it like the song said, “A kiss is just a kiss”?

The kiss, simple though it was, lasted much longer than Meg liked. She silently urged Haley to resist. Not only because she wanted to win the bet—although that now seemed far less important—but because she didn’t want Haley anywhere near him.

“Come on, Haley. Knock it off.” Anger welled inside her. Were all the so-called “good girls” in Cottageville fakes?

Haley appeared to have forgotten her vow of chastity. Chance pulled her to a standing position and wrapped his arms around her. Haley hesitated, then clung to him.

“Stars and moon, what’s going on?” The woman acted like Chance had cast a spell over her.

Needing to see better yet hating herself for having to, Meg climbed on top of a statue of a small garden gnome. Balancing on one foot, she no longer cared if anyone saw her.

Chance slid his hand along Haley’s back, over the curve of her hip and cupped her bottom. Yet instead of pushing him away, the teacher thrust her hips toward his.

“What the hell is going on in this town? I choose the two most unlikely women in the entire town, the two women who supposedly won’t let any man touch them and, bam, they’re ready to hop into the sack at his first touch.” Meg uttered a few curses to go along with her rant.

Her anger made her forget where she was and what she was standing on.
